  3. Tai Chi Basic 1: Walking Meditation

    February 20, 2019, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM @ Community Room

    This class will introduce a series of Tai Chi walking poses. This set of movements requires that your stepping becomes steady over time. It continuously tests and improves your sense of physical and energetic balance through your legs and feet. As you develop the strength and energy in your legs, each move will naturally transfer into your cores and arms, and then form a well-coordinated entire body movement. It is an accessible Mind-Body practice for soothing stress and maximizing function. Hongyi Lan, PhD-Instructor Hongyi has practiced Tai Chi Chuan for more than 25 years. She first learned Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan and then learned Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan from Master Liang Shan. Hongyi believes Tai Chi/QiGong is an ideal mind-body exercise for everyone. Master Lan is a scholar and teacher devoted to spreading these ancient exercises to as many people as possible.

    Long Life Yoga is your “just right” yoga for longevity. Senior Yoga? Too gentle, few results. Vinyasa Flow? Too dangerous, risky for the joints/spine. Both are often taught by instructors with little experience. Long Life Yoga is a unique class developed over 20 years by YogaHotDish founder Shaila Cunningham. This challenging class weeds out poses and techniques where the risk does not justify the reward. It also approaches yoga as “meditation in motion” so you capture the cognitive and mood benefits—impossible with music and mirrors. So what is your longevity strategy? You try to plan early for your financial retirement, but what is your wellness plan for ensuring you can continue to live fully and enjoy it? Long Life Yoga is for active seniors, desk/sedentary workers, beginners, those rehabbing injuries or wanting to avoid them in the first place. Must be able to get up off the floor unassisted, albeit slowly.

    Did you know that relaxation is a skill? People who master it do not necessarily have less stress; but, they are better at managing it. Yoga and meditation are ancient practices that provide the ideal framework for weaving relaxation into our busy modern lives. Instead of spending your time at the doctor’s office, perhaps invest 2 hours learning to boost your immune system, improve energy and cognition and lower the overall resting tension of your body. This 2-hour intensive, led by Shaila Cunningham, covers assorted yoga and meditation techniques gleaned from 20 years of experience studying around the world. Imagine stopping the endless onslaught of thoughts so your brain can catch up and your body can rest efficiently. Do not leave relaxation to chance, and certainly do not leave it to screens! You must be able to move from seated to standing position without assistance. This is an all-levels class, great for family and friends of differing fitness levels. Some equipment provided.
